Pseudoallergy - Is increased reactivity to certain substances entering the body, with the development of clinical signs characteristic of a true allergy. But it is not a true allergy, even though it involves mast cell activation and the release of histamine.
Pseudo allergy like true allergy can result in a wide range of symptoms, commonly linked to those experiencing pain syndromes , CIRS and stress disorders like anxiety or depression.
Management of psuedo allergies usually involves following
- a low histamine diet (recommended for histamine intolerance and Mast Cell Activation Disorders MCAS)
- MSG free diet
- low amine diet - often recommended for the management of migraines
- low salicylate diet
- Avoidance of food additives, colourings and preservatives (whole food diet)
- or a low Salicylate, Amine and Glutamine Diet
- Avoiding certain supplements and medications like Aspirin, NSAIDS, others high in salicylates - phenols
It can also involve reducing exposure to allergens like dust and mould and pollens, fragrances and everyday chemicals (vasomotor rhinitis - NAR ), and he use of anti histamine or other (if tolerated and helpful).
Dysregulation, toxicity - gut dybiosis, poor liver functioning, and untreated infections may be underlying contributor to pseudo allergies. These issues are often ones addressd by doctors trained in functional medicine. Pseudo allergies may also be linked to some untreated medical conditions, and for some people may be genetically linked e.g. DOA deficiency.
